Indian Restaurant Offers Curry with Complimentary Side of Racism

September 30, 2015 – Things got extra spicy at an Indian restaurant in suburban London when it came time for customer Stuart Lynn to pay his bill. Lynn reviewed the charges and was shocked to find his receipt marked:

“VERY MILD, WHITE PPL.”

In the restaurant’s defense, Lynn had ordered his venison curry “very mild” and, well, Lynn is indeed white.

But the 44-year-old Heathrow supervisor considered the receipt to be a racial slur, implying that white people can’t handle curries that are not mild.

The owner of the Valentine restaurant, Ruby Kandasamy, clarified what they meant by “white ppl”:

“Under white ppl, we don’t mean white people, but a white sauce made from milk, single cream, coconut milk and spices we add to our dishes when a curry is requested mild. ‘Ppl’ means ‘milk.’ “However, we have decided to change the way we inform the kitchen and will mention ‘add white ppl’ or ‘with white sauce’ to avoid any confusion with our customers.”

The restaurant’s explanation curried no favor with Stuart:
“What other colour is milk? I spoke to an Indian friend of mine and ‘ppl’ doesn’t mean milk. They’re just trying to get out of it.”

    1. Racism, whether subtle or gross, comes from treating people differently because of their race. This is not something somebody should call the ACLU over, but it is worth remembering that racism isn’t just something white people do. And I’ve seen brutal racism right in front of me that involved no white people at all.

  1. I don’t find it racist but I find the unprofessional aspect of it annoying as someone in the service industry. And their response about really meaning “milk” is a huge crock of shit. I’m not about to claim customers aren’t made fun of by employees at any location that deals with the general public, but when you’re caught doing it act like an adult and apologize, and make more effort to not let something like that slip by.
