For Your (Super Serious) Consideration

January 5th, 2018 – During a time filled with looming political decisions ranging from the Children’s Health Insurance Program to the fate of nearly 700,000 DACA recipients, Donald Trump has decided to throw out another agenda item. The president tweeted that he would be announcing “THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR.” In true showmanship fashion, he gave us plenty of notice and teased that we should stay tuned for the declaration of categories and nominees.

Many assume that his usual targets – CNN, MSNBC, and the Trump-labeled failing New York Times – will get the honor of being nominated, but it’s the late-night comedy shows that have really gotten excited for the event.

Award season finds many studios taking out ads for their projects in an effort to bump their chances of winning a Golden Globe or an Oscar. Stephen Colbert was the first host to follow the formula as he took out a “For Your Consideration” billboard in Times Square. The Late Show host directed the copy at the president and listed several categories for which he’d like to be nominated:

  • Outstanding Achievement In Parroting George Soros’ Talking Points
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Chex Mixing
  • The Eric Trump Memorial Award For Disappointment
  • Least Breitbarty
  • Smallest Button

Not to be outdone, Samantha Bee and Trevor Noah mocked up some “For Your Consideration” ads for Full Frontal and The Daily Show.

Bee has propositioned herself to earn top prize for “Shrillest Reporting” and added some kind-hearted comments about herself from YouTube.

Noah took the traditional route that Colbert originally chose and put his money where his lyin’ mouth is. Knowing it was likely that Trump himself would see it, the comedian took out a full-page ad in The New York Times. His pitch included a suggestion from Trump supporter Scott Baio along with a reminder that his show is “SO FAKE, EVEN THIS AD ISN’T REAL.”

The “Most Dishonest & Corrupt Media Awards of the Year” will take place at 5pm this coming Monday.

What do you think about President Trump hosting “The Fakies?” Do you think the late-night comedians have responded in appropriate fashion?
