New York Post Headline – “Enjoy A Foot Long in Jail”

August 20, 2015 – Following Jared Fogle’s guilty plea on child pornography charges, the New York Post used it’s front page to target the former Subway pitchman with a headine reading “Enjoy a Foot Long in Jail.” The obvious reference to the Subway slogan implies what might await Jared once he arrives in the slammer. Similar jokes have been circulating online since the story first broke, but many people expected more, even from the New York Post.

Perez Hilton took to his website:

“Rape isn’t funny. It’s a serious problem in our penal system and not something for a supposedly serious news organization to be making light of. It certainly isn’t something you should be wishing on someone, no matter who they are! We understand and absolutely agree that what Jared did is despicable and unforgivable. Even if you don’t mind the Post saying something so offensive, since it is directed at a child sex offender, come on!”

And Twitter lit up:

But for some New Yorkers this was merely par for the Post:

To condemn NY Post headlines is like getting upset that the subways are crowded. It’s a key part of living here. Don’t like it, leave.

Clearly Jared is the “butt” of the joke, but did the punchline go too far? Touchy subject indeed.
