June 6th, 2018 – An Italian male is being condemned in the press and around the Internet for taking a selfie in front of paramedics treating an elderly woman who had just been hit by a train.
The injured woman, an 83-year-old Canadian tourist, was struck by a train May 26th at the Piacenza station near Milan in northern Italy after she exited the wrong door, Canada’s Global News reported.
The young man took the selfie with his left hand while making a V for Victory sign with his right, just a few feet from where medics were attending the injured woman, who was writhing on the ground in agony. The woman later had her leg amputated at an Italian hospital.
Police at the station ordered the selfie-taker to delete the images from his phone and then released him.
The scene was captured by local news photographer, Giorgio Lambri of Liberta. He wrote an article for the paper calling the incident:
“The barbarism you don’t expect: the ‘selfie’ in front of a tragedy.”
The picture appeared in many Italian newspapers which sparked a national debate on the modern culture of selfie-taking. La Stampa attacked the “cancer that corrodes the internet,” and a radio news commentator said the sickening situation was a sign that the human race is “galloping toward extinction,” the BBC reported.
The Italian police investigated the incident but concluded that the young man, who has not been named, had committed no crime. Lambri told the Global News that he has also been criticized for taking a photo of the situation, but he said that it’s his job to record the news.
“I have seen many crimes and terrifying scenes, but I’m not ready to [see] this,” he told Global News. The most terrible thing is that guy doesn’t understand absolutely the badness of his behavior.”
It has been reported that there have been over 358 deaths from selfie accidents over the past 6 years. If there were any karma, perhaps this guy would become one of them.
