Rebel Wilson’s VMA Police Brutality Jokes Not Pitch Perfect for Everyone
August 31, 2015 – Even with a flashing Miley Cyrus, it was Rebel Wilson who caught flack when she appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards in a police uniform later revealing a “Fuck Tha Stripper Police” t-shirt. Her comedic monologue was a nod to the issue of police brutality and the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
Rebel Wilson quickly transitioned her commentary from the regular police to the stripper police:
“A lot of people have problem with the police, but I really hate police strippers. You guys know what I’m talking about. They come to your house, you think you’re getting arrested, and you just get a lap dance that is usually uninspired! I hired police stripper for my grandma’s 80th, and he wouldn’t even feel her up…. I hate this injustice, hence the shirt.”
Maybe too soon for many who took to Twitter to relay their displeasure:
“I know a lot of people have problems with the police, but I have a problem with police strippers.” -Rebel Wilson police brutality=/=joke.

.@RebelWilson/@MTV, police violence isn’t a joke, as the deaths of #TamirRice, #RekiaBoyd, #FreddieGray, #MikeBrown, & #MyaHall remind us.

When’s the last time you heard a Holocaust, Sandy Hook, or Columbine joke at an awards show? Exactly. https://t.co/mBnjbra3QP — deray mckesson (@deray) August 31, 2015
But comics including Kurt Metzger quickly defended Wilson:
Deray Mckesson is a fine protestor but doesn’t know shit about jokes and maybe should stay out of it. — Kurt Metzger (@kurtmetzger) August 31, 2015
And yes Deray, holocaust and columbine jokes are also fine. — Kurt Metzger (@kurtmetzger) August 31, 2015
And from Metzger’s Facebook page:
“Yes Deray, police brutality ISNT funny. That’s why you make a joke. Why does no one get how jokes work??? You dont make jokes out of things that are already funny. You make them out of pain.”
