June 15th, 2026 – UFC heavyweight fighter Josh Hokit generated widespread backlash after making a controversial remark about former First Lady Michelle Obama during a post-fight interview at UFC Freedom 250, an event held on the South Lawn of the White House on June 14.
The event, organized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), was part of celebrations surrounding America’s 250th anniversary and coincided with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The card featured several high-profile bouts and marked the first major professional sporting event held on White House grounds.
Following his victory over Derrick Lewis, Hokit spoke with commentator Joe Rogan inside the cage. After thanking President Trump and expressing gratitude to his Christian faith, Hokit concluded his remarks by saying, “Michelle Obama is a man. Am I right, America?” The statement referenced a long-running conspiracy theory that has repeatedly been debunked by fact-checkers and widely criticized as false.
The comment immediately drew mixed reactions from the crowd, with reports describing audible groans and boos from some attendees. Rogan did not directly respond to the statement and instead ended the interview by introducing Hokit to the audience.
The incident quickly spread across social media, where sports journalists, political commentators, and fans criticized Hokit for using a high-profile sporting platform to promote a personal attack. Several prominent commentators described the remark as inappropriate and offensive.
UFC CEO Dana White also distanced himself from the statement. While emphasizing his support for free speech, White said he disapproved of comments directed at public figures’ families and characterized Hokit’s remark as “nonsense.”
The controversy overshadowed what had otherwise been a significant victory for Hokit. The undefeated heavyweight prospect earned one of the biggest wins of his career by stopping Lewis and had entered the event with considerable momentum following earlier victories in the UFC.
Neither Michelle Obama nor representatives for the Obama family had publicly responded to the remark as of Monday. The White House also did not directly address the comment.
