Zoolander 2 Boycott Over “Cartoonish” Trans Character

November 25, 2015 – Ben Stiller’s Zoolander 2 hits theaters next February, but a new petition is currently circulating online in protest over the portrayal of a transgender supermodel named “All” played by Benedict Cumberbatch. According to the petition created by author Sarah Rose:

“In the Zoolander 2 trailer, an androgynous character played by Benedict Cumberbatch is asked by Zoolander and Hansel if he is a ‘male or female model,’ and if they ‘have a hot dog or a bun.’ Additionally, Cumberbatch’s character is clearly portrayed as an over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals. This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority.”

The petition closes with:

“Tell Paramount Pictures, Ben Stiller, and Benedict Cumberbatch that mocking transgender/androgyne/gender fluid individuals is not okay – sign this petition to pledge to boycott the film!”

So far, Rose’s petition has received more than 12,000 signatures.

Zoolander 2 is out on Feb. 12. Check out the trailer below courtesy of Paramount Pictures:

  1. Everyone in Zoolander is an ‘over-the-top, cartoonish mockery’, that’s the pivot around which the comedy revolves. Complainers just make arses of themselves and the people they want to ‘protect’.
