December 11th, 2024 – The Pennsylvania McDonald’s restaurant where police arrested the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been flooded with negative reviews. Since the arrest, social media has lit up with calls for suspect Luigi Mangione to be freed, which has led to users leaving bad reviews for the fast-food restaurant, even if they’ve likely never been there.
Google removed a series of derogatory one-star reviews about the restaurant, with many including puns about “rats” in the kitchen, after the cashier “ratted out” the suspect,.
Known as “review bombing,” a large number of accounts post negative reviews to harm the popularity of a business, often after a widely reported event.
One review, since deleted, said: “This location has rats in the kitchen that will make you sick and your insurance isn’t going to cover it.”
Another wrote: “Do not stop here if you are an American Hero. They will sell you out.”
Others are also calling it “noisy” because “employees talk too much,” again, likely referring to the employee talking to dispatch/police.
“Mcdiarrrhea of the mouth here. Would not recommend. Unsafe food served by unsafe ppl. Curious what insurance plans employees get working here,” one user from Illinois wrote on Yelp.
In a statement, a Google spokesperson said: “These reviews violate our policies and have been removed.” Yelp has shut down reviews for the location, citing “unusual activity.”
