Samantha Bee Slammed For Calling Ivanka Trump a 'Feckless C**t'

Update: Samantha Bee issued an apology on her Twitter page just before noon on 5/30/18 saying “I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.” TBS also issued a similar statement: “Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night. Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

May 31st 2018 -Not everyone is laughing at a vulgar joke Samantha Bee directed at Ivanka Trump. During her Full Frontal episode last night, the comic took aim at Ivanka for not using her position as both First Daughter and Advisor to the President to combat the cruel practice of separating immigrant children from their mothers at the border.

Bee set up the joke by showing a tweet Ivanka posted amidst the breaking news stories about children as young as 18 months being torn from their families. Plenty of people slammed the White House official for the tone deaf quality of the tweet. Bee took it even further.

“Ivanka Trump, who works at the White House, chose to post the second most oblivious tweet we’ve seen this week,” she said. “You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless c**t!”

“He listens to you,” she went on. “Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to f**king stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes, OK?”

Outrage sprang quickly as people called her out not only for the vulgarity and sexism but for the double standard in holding conservative and liberal comics to different standards. Read: we spent the past 48 hours dissecting the cancellation of Roseanne after the star’s racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett.

Not everyone is equating the vulgar word choice Bee chose to Barr’s comments when they consider the larger historical context of calling a black person an ape. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, however, sees no difference. She issued a lengthy and scathing response calling on Time Warner and TBS to take action.

“The language used by Samantha Bee last night is vile and vicious. The collective silence by the left and its media allies is appalling,” she said in a statement. “Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast, and executives at Time Warner and TBS must demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of this administration will not be condoned on its network.”

She wasn’t alone in her thinking as people dashed to their Twitter accounts to share their thoughts.

The problem w/ liberal comics like Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, and Kathy Griffin is that they’ve replaced laughs with applause… so instead of trying to make people laugh they’re just trying to get ppl who agree with them to clap.

The other side of the debate had people defending Bee – noting the irony in their support for the “grab ’em by the pu**y” president.

I love @iamsambee but don’t love gendered attacks like calling a woman the c word (even by comedians who I give extra leeway to).

Comedienne Samantha Bee can call Ivanka Trump a feckless c-word on her comedy show. If she then goes on to tweet that Ivanka is a dirty Jew with horns, I’ll join you in protesting her TBS show, but there is a difference between coarse language, political opinion and bigotry.

At the time of this posting, neither TBS or Bee herself have released an official response.

Tina Fey has also not commented, but her Mean Girls character, Ms. Norbury, did once share this piece of advice to women: “You all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores…it just makes it OK for guys to call you sluts and whores.”
