July 23, 2015 – Sandra Bland was found dead from apparent “self-inflicted asphyxiation” in her cell in a Texas jail last week, three days after her arrest following a routine traffic stop which quickly escalated. Waller County, Texas District Attorney Elton Mathis announced that the death of Sandra Bland would be treated as thoroughly “as it would be in a murder investigation,” but at the same press conference Waller County Sheriff’s Office Captain of Patrol Brian Cantrell had this to say:
“I want to make clear that the death of Ms. Bland was a tragic incident — not one of criminal intent or a criminal act,” Cantrell said.
Since then, more dash-cam footage has been released showing how the situation on the scene escalated. There is currently a growing debate over whether or not the Sandra Bland arrest footage had been edited.
