“Jokes aren’t illegal.”

July 7th, 2017 – Damon Wayans Jr. sent out a 4th of July greeting on social media just like most celebrities and your aunt also did earlier this week. His well-wishes, however, weren’t sweet greetings hoping for a fun day with family and friends but rather a joke about white people celebrating their racist ancestors.

The tweet has now gained thousands of likes and retweets but initially it earned the former Happy Endings star quite a bit of pushback. People accused him of fabricating racism, being a Hollywood elite talking down to Americans, and others questioned if he was even really joking.

Replying to “Just another example of Hollywood talking down to Americans. They hate this country & their fans. sadly returns ,” the comedian tweeted:

When questioned by someone about his true intent, Wayans Jr. shot back:

The son of actor/comedian Damon Wayans, Damon Jr. has been on a standup run over the summer but this joke in particular may have attracted the most attention. Thousands of people continued to respond to the Independence Day greeting with many telling him he should be grateful to the country he’s profited from.

Wayans Jr. seemed unaffected by all of it as the next day rolled around he was focused on FireTwerks.
